Locke Psychotherapy Services is a private
psychotherapy clinic providing cognitive behaviour therapy for a range
of personal difficulties.
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a generic term used to describe
personal counselling. Many trained professionals provide
psychotherapy, including social workers, psychologists, nurses, and
psychiatrists. What is cognitive behaviour therapy?
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a type of
psychotherapy that has been widely researched in the scientific and
academic community. CBT has been demonstrated to be a particularly
effective approach for a wide variety of anxiety and mood-related
difficulties. The term "cognitive" refers to thoughts, thinking
styles, beliefs, perceptions, and assumptions. A CBT approach is one
that highlights the client's thoughts and feelings and explores the
unique meaning that individuals make of situations and events. The
term "behaviour" refers to all that people do and don't do, including
what people avoid. CBT methods include encouraging and helping clients
to set regular behaviour goals. The cognitive behaviour approach
values collaboration between the client and therapist. Clients are
encouraged to experiment with their lives just like a scientist
conducts research in a lab. Personal growth activities between therapy
sessions provide clients with additional opportunities to consolidate
learning between appointments. Who will I meet with
for psychotherapy?
You will meet with a registered clinical social worker
who has completed education and training or its equivalent from an
accredited school of social work. The initials M.S.W. indicate a
master's degree in social work. The initials R.S.W. (Registered Social
Worker) indicate that they are a member of the Ontario College of
Social Workers (OCSWSSW), an organization that was established in
accordance with the Social Work and Social Service Work Act.
Is there a fee?
Locke Psychotherapy Services is a fee-for-service
private psychotherapy clinic. Services offered are not covered by
OHIP. However, some insurance plans and a number of workplaces do
cover the cost of psychotherapy provided by registered social workers.
Please consult your employee benefits package or call your human
resource department to be sure. How do I get started?
Locke Psychotherapy Services welcomes individuals age
18 and older, with or without a physician referral. When you
initially contact the clinic by phone (905-525-0810), a short,
confidential intake call will take place. You will be asked about the
nature of what is currently causing you difficulty. General
information will be provided about the clinic, including fees and
therapist availability. This intake call usually takes about 15
minutes. What can I expect?
Once an initial appointment has been established, you
will meet with your therapist who will assess your needs. You will be
asked a range of questions in addition to what is currently of concern
to you, including brief questions about your background and lifestyle.
After this appointment, you will be given a standard clinic package
which includes the following:
-
an initial life history questionnaire
-
a document which overviews how the clinic operates
-
the clinic's privacy policy
-
a mini-resume of your therapist, including his or her
education and training.
Often, it is at the second appointment that your
therapist will share with you his or her conclusions, including
whether they feel that they can help you. Such conclusions will act as
the basis for a collaborative client-therapist approach to reaching
goals. The likely time frame for your therapy will also be discussed.
Finally, this assessment process also offers you a chance to assess
your therapist, as selecting a psychotherapist is a very personal
decision. Tel: 905-525-0810
