Who is Brenda Mills?

  • In addition to my private practice – I work for the Hamilton Family Health Team as the Coordinator of Child & Youth Mental Health.

  • I have been educated & trained as a Child & Youth Worker in addition to The Clinical Behavioural Sciences Program - McMaster University, Health Sciences. I am a registered member of the Ontario Association of Child & Youth Counsellors.

  • I have worked as a Child & Family Therapist at McMaster Children’s Hospital for 14yrs. – my experience is working with children, teens & caregivers who have emotional, behavioural, social, and cognitive difficulties

  • I have specialized in the area of anger management (Temper Taming) and parenting challenging teens.

What is Counselling and How Can It Help?

  • Counselling occurs when an individual (child, teen, and caregiver) identifies a problem of an emotional, behavioural or social nature. The person meets with a trained counsellor to help them resolve their problem(s).

  • Counselling can prevent “normal” problems from becoming more serious, avoiding long-term negative effects.

  • Counselling can help to improve and strengthen relationships.

  • Counselling can help the individual and/or family set goals to bring about positive change

What Kind of Problems Occur for Children, Teens & Families?

  • Behavioural problems – sibling & family conflict, oppositional behaviour, aggression, not following rules, conflict at school and/or recreational activities

  • Social problems – difficulty making and keeping friends, negative peer influence, bullying & teasing, difficulty joining in

  • Emotional problems – struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, adjustment to stressful life events (grief, loss, separation/divorce).

  • All of the above problems can have a negative effect on relationships at home, school & the community.

How Do I Get Started?

  • Brenda Mills – Counselling Services located at 150 Locke St. South in The Regent Health Centre which offers a wide range of health and wellness services.

  • You can call me and leave a message at (905) 525-0810. I will be picking up my messages on a daily basis and will return your call.

  • You can drop by The Regent Health Centre and leave a message with the receptionist – a receptionist is available Mon. to Fri. from 9am to 5pm.

  • Appointments are available during the day and evenings.

What Services are Available and What are the Fees?

Office Consultation:
• Wondering if counselling will be helpful?
• Questioning if “the problem” is a problem?
• Do you want to know more about how my skills and experience will help you?

Fee: $50.00 for ½ hour

Assessment:
• Where, when and how are the difficulties occurring?
• What have you done to overcome the problem(s)?
• How is the problem impacting on the child, teen’s, family’s quality of life?
• What can be done to lessen or eliminate the problem(s)?

Treatment:
• A variety of treatment options are available (client centered, cognitive behavioural, behaviour modification, family-centered)
• Individual counselling, family counselling, parenting, group counselling

Fee: $65.00 for 1 hr. session

In-home Consultation:
• Are routines and household rules a challenge?
• Would you like family members to get along better?
• Would you like your parenting styles to be more compatible
• Have you taken the “parenting classes” and somehow the strategies just aren’t working…?

Fee: $100.00 for 1hr. (including travel)

Cancellation Policy: Services will not be charged if you cancel or reschedule appointments 24 hrs. in advance – otherwise the cost of a 1 hr. session will be charged ($65.00).
