About Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is the treatment and prevention of disease by
natural means. Naturopathic Doctors assess the whole person, taking
into consideration physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects
of the individual. Gentle, non-invasive techniques are generally used
in order to stimulate the body’s inherent self-healing capacity.
The following guiding principles are fundamental to every treatment
plan:
- First, do no harm. Promote optimal health with the least risk
for each patient.
- The healing power of nature is always respected.
- Treat the cause. Treat the fundamental cause of illness.
Identify and remove the causes while avoiding suppression of
symptoms.
- Doctor as teacher. The doctor’s role is also as a teacher
and role-model for patient education, for the inspiration of
rational hope and to encourage self-responsibility.
- Treat the whole person. Address the unique physical, emotional
an mental factors which influence each person’s well-being.
- Prevention. Promote optimal health and well-being to prevent
future illness.
A number of different approaches may be used throughout the course
of treatment. Treatment modalities include diet, lifestyle
counselling, clinical nutrition (supplementation), botanical medicine,
homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture,
hydrotherapy, and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy.
Clinical Nutrition is the foundation of optimal health. Many
conditions may be prevented or treated by modifications to the diet
and/or using specific nutrients. Treatment may include special diets
and nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, and other
therapeutic products.
Botanical Medicine is a plant-based medicine based on traditional
practices and scientific research that involves the use of herbal
teas, tinctures, capsules, and other forms of herbal preparations to
assist in recovery from injury and illness, and to support and promote
the healing processes which naturally exist within the body.
Naturopathic Doctors are trained in the appropriate use of medicinal
plants as well as drug-herb interactions.
Homeopathic Medicine is based on the principle of “like cures like”
and uses minute amounts of natural substances to powerfully stimulate
the self-healing abilities of the body. These principles have been
systematically observed clinically for more than 200 years. Homeopathy
helps restore health to the entire body.
Traditional Chinese Medicine which includes acupuncture, herbal
formulas and dietary changes is based on balancing the flow of Chi
(energy) through the meridian pathways. TCM involves an ancient system
of diagnosis based on specific patterns and combinations of symptoms
that have been observed over thousands of years.
Lifestyle counselling is used to teach a patient how to incorporate
balance between work, nutrition, exercise, and activities of daily
living. While the benefits are significant, creating change in one’s
lifestyle can be challenging. Naturopathic care involves supporting
the patient through treatments using a collaborative process between
patient and doctor.
Hydrotherapy refers to the use of hot and cold water applications.
Hydrotherapy is a non-invasive, economical and effective therapeutic
approach that stimulates the immune system, facilitates
detoxification, and promotes lymph drainage and circulation. Phoenix
Rising Yoga Therapy is the combination of classical yoga techniques
and elements of contemporary body-mind psychology. Lorraine Caruso, ND,
uses PRYT to encourage a deeper understanding of the whole self.
Through assisted yoga postures and non-directive dialogue, the
practitioner guides the client to experience the connection of their
physical and emotional selves. Using focused breathing, this
connection is held and explored, fostering release, personal growth
and healing. Your Naturopathic Doctor will take a thorough case
history. Assessment of each patient’s physical, mental, emotional,
spiritual and environmental well-being is required to facilitate this
work. A basic, complaint-oriented physical exam and specific urine,
blood, and other laboratory tests may be used as part of the treatment
work-up.
